With St. Patrick's Day coming up this weekend, a lot of folks have some drinking in their future. Here are some links to get you started.
- In the Washington Post, Jason Wilson presents the new standards for drinking like a girl. (Girly drinks are out. Kick-ass female bartenders are in.)
- In the New York Times, Robert Simonson writes about the 10th anniversary of Tales of the Cocktail, the pioneering New Orleans conference, coming up this July.
- Also in the New York Times, Rosie Schaap shares her thoughts on Irish whiskey.
- In the San Francisco Chronicle, Camper English writes about Irish whiskeys, too. He includes a recipe for the Derry Derby, which sounds good.
- But wait -- Liquor.com offers their suggestions for Irish whiskeys. I'm really looking forward to the new Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength -- if only I could find some!
- Not to be outdone, The Spir.It presents 8 brands of Irish whiskey for you to consider.
- Some cool news I spotted in Forbes Magazine: Knob Creek, makers of fine small batch bourbon, are releasing a new rye whiskey later this year.
- Speaking of the new Knob Creek Rye -- the Whiskey Advocate's John Hansell has nice things to say about it, as well as some other new whiskeys that are coming soon.
- Is this Pisco's moment to shine? Liquor.com thinks so, and suggests 3 brands to try. (I've yet to sample this South American brandy.)
- In The Atlantic, Nathaniel Parish Flannery make a trip to Mexico to see how tequila is made.
- In the Kansas City Star, Anne Brockhoff investigates the growing popularity of mezcal in the United States.
- In CLASS Magazine, Simon Difford and Ian Cameron round up 5 varieties of blue curacao. Their favorite is the Joseph Cartron Curacao Blue, which I don't believe is available in the U.S.
- The Los Angeles Times reports on the Chicago cocktail scene, including the best bars.
- Details Magazine offers up 5 biggest cocktail-order fails. I'm not sure I agree with these. They're a little uptight.
- Wine Enthusiast Magazine uncovers the wine and cocktails of the Titanic. Includes recipes for the Tom Collins and Robert Burns.
- Imbibe Magazine reports on New York's booming craft distilleries. The city was once home to scores of distilleries -- and maybe one day it will be again.
- Patrón shares a recipe for the Patrón Perfect Cosmo. Not sure how this one would taste with tequila.
- Some speciality bars have started showcasing Fernet Branca taps in recent months. But Jack Rose in D.C. now has a bourbon tap!
- The Weekly Pint rounds up the 5 best beers of 2012 (part one).
That's it for now. Don't drink too much this weekend. Happy St. Paddy!
