Zoe Sharp's heroine, Charlie Fox, might remind readers of a female version of Lee Child's Jack Reacher -- she's tough, no-nonsense and more than capable of breaking heads when the occasion requires it. And in Third Strike, her latest adventure, the occasion requires it quite a bit.
Fox used to be a soldier and now she's a bodyguard, but whatever she does, a dark cloud seems to follow her. When that cloud stretches to encompass her father, from whom she's estranged, the drama takes on an even more personal dimension.
The action in Third Strike is frequent, with a matter-of-fact attitude towards violence that might turn off some readers, but always keeps the momentum moving and the stakes high. This is not a book you'll want to scrutinize for the nuances of the plot, but if you just sit back and go with it, you'll be in for a fast-paced, entertaining ride.
