The plot then flashes forward to an archaeological dig in modern-day Rome. An ancient tomb has been unearthed, and the scientists studying it believe they may have made a find of incalculable importance: the fabled Memory Stones, which are reputed to hold the key to accessing past lives.

The stones are a prize almost beyond compare, with obsessive collectors, reincarnation fanatics and even the Catholic Church desperate to take possession of them. Is it a coincidence that Ryder just happens to be there to see the stones unearthed? And could it possibly be true that the very tomb the archaeologists uncovered was the final resting place of his long lost love?

As The Reincarnationist progresses, the present-day hunt for the stones is juxtaposed with the ancient story of Julius and his inamorata, both plotlines filled with action and romance. The way Rose seamlessly interweaves the two stories is impressive, alternating between the doomed love story and the thrilling quest for the stones to generate delicious tension and suspense.

Writing any novel is a challenge, but crafting a story like The Reincarnationist is surely even harder that most. If the way reincarnation is handled comes off as silly, the book fails. If the two parallel stories don't mesh as they're woven together, the plot falls apart. If the book's historical details don't ring true, the story loses credibility. Yet none of those things happen, because Rose has the talent to make it all work.

As is the case with all of Rose's novels, the characters and relationships are the shining stars. She imbues her creations with a liveliness that draws readers in, and their interplay can't help but enchant. This time Rose has gone all out, casting those characters against an epic plot that takes her storytelling to an exhilarating new level.

According to a 2005 Gallup poll, 20 percent of U.S. adults believe in reincarnation. For the other 80 percent of us, a certain willing suspension of disbelief is necessary to accept and ultimately enjoy the twists and turns of The Reincarnationist's plot. But if we can accept a genius serial killer who enjoys feasting on his victim's liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti, surely reincarnation isn't that much of a leap.
