Joe Pitt is the ultimate hardboiled hyphenate: a private eye-vampire. Pitt lived a fairly ordinary existence -- as ordinary as a vampire's life can be, anyway -- in the first two books in the series, but now that he's reached the fourth, things are growing increasingly complicated.
Pitt is beset by vampire coalitions on all sides -- some advocating rapprochement with the human world; some searching for a cure to the vampire-creating Vyrus; others out to get every last drop (power, blood, whatever) for themselves. Pitt must somehow navigate that treacherous world while trying to keep his not-quite-immortal self intact.
There are times when the action in Every Last Drop threatens to be overwhelmed by all the talking, meandering as it sometimes does for pages at a time. But there's no denying that Huston has created one of the most fascinating characters in modern crime/horror fiction, and placed him in a world that is endlessly entertaining to read about.
