Alafair Burke's second book featuring NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher, Angel's Tip, is a skillful procedural that enlivens its serial killer plot with an appealing heroine and a fresh and engaging style.
Hatcher is jogging one morning when she discovers a dead body. Eager to assert herself as a newly minted homicide detective, she seizes the case for herself, working it tirelessly with her partner. The victim is a beautiful teenager from the Midwest, and her murder is fodder for the city's tabloids. When it appears that the case ties into several previous murders, the interest in the investigation only heightens.
Angel's Tip is a marked improvement over the first book in the series, which too often felt flat and ordinary. Hatcher comes into her own in this one and Burke's confident storytelling serves her character well. Angel's Tip demonstrates that Burke is a force to be reckoned with in the thriller genre.
